Why we champion a strength-based approach to First Nations funding

Why is this pilot event an important step in the right direction for First Nations funding?

Firstly, we want to acknowledge the incredible work already being done in this space by First Nations-led organisations. We're not entering as leaders, but as contributors, adding our voice and efforts to an ongoing conversation. Many have been part of this journey long before we arrived, and we deeply respect and draw inspiration from those who have paved the way. Our work is a continuation of the momentum built by others, inspired by conversations with First Nations leaders who have shared their insights and experiences.

TFN has built its reputation on finding and funding early-stage social enterprises, breaking down the barriers between grassroots initiatives and traditional philanthropy. Further extending our model of trust-based, flexible funding to First Nations organisations in remote and regional communities is a natural evolution of this approach.

We recognise that the constraints of traditional funding models and success metrics often fail to capture the true potential of First Nations businesses. By listening to and learning from First Nations perspectives across the sector, we understand that success is measured in different ways - rooted in community impact and cultural values. Through this pilot event, we’re aiming to demonstrate that collective giving and access to a powerful network of individuals, foundations, businesses and philanthropists offering more than just funding is a viable model for supporting First Nations enterprises.

"The most powerful aspect of this work is the ripple effect that goes into Indigenous communities, because by supporting Indigenous entrepreneurs, who are creating opportunities for economic empowerment and inclusion, also means an investment into positive role models, local experts and leaders within our communities."

- Liandra Gaykamangu, Founder of LIANDRA & Executive Director of Enterprise Learning Projects. Member of the TFN First Nations Advisory Council.

We’re working together to create change:

Inclusive and Flexible Funding for First Nations Enterprises:

Removes barriers to traditional funding by offering flexible financial support tailored to the needs of First Nations businesses, acknowledging diverse forms of success and traction.

Empowering Community-Controlled, Localised Funding:

Funding mechanisms are designed to empower communities, reducing power imbalances and promoting self-determination by giving control over how funds are distributed and managed.

Building a Sustainable, Resilient Business Pipeline:

Through financial support and professional development via TFN’s Alumni Program, the initiative contributes to a sustainable sector, helping First Nations businesses grow, become investment-ready, and make lasting community impacts.

Strength-Based, Collaborative Leadership Approach:

The initiative recognises unique success indicators and is led by First Nations leaders with lived experience, ensuring the support provided aligns with the community’s strengths and needs.

Together, we are stronger.
